WHY IT’S WORTH THE DRIVE

Why Westwood Gardeners Make the Drive

Skip years of waiting. Plant a tree that already looks at home.

LONGEST RUNNING

A Nursery With Real Roots

We have grown fruit trees longer than anyone in Southern California. Westwood clients get that know-how on every visit.

40 YEARS

Mature Trees, Instant Shade and Fruit

Our largest trees reach up to 40 years old. Many are fruiting when you take them home.

PATIO-READY

Great Picks for Smaller Lots

Container-grown trees suit condo patios and tight yards. Citrus, fig and kumquat stay compact in pots.

RARE

Hard-to-Find Tropical Varieties

Find lychee, longan, jaboticaba and dragon fruit that Westside garden centers rarely stock.

FEATURED TREES

Compact Fruit Trees for Westwood Patios and Small Yards

Westwood gardens are often a balcony, a courtyard or a narrow side yard.

These varieties stay manageable and still fruit well in containers.

Availability changes often. Check our inventory or call 760-434-5085 before you make the drive.

MINIATURE PEACH

Honey Babe and Bonanza Miniature Peaches

Genetic miniature peaches top out at a size that fits a large patio pot. Honey Babe has firm, sweet yellow flesh. Bonanza Miniature blooms bright pink in spring. Both are bred for warm winters like Westwood's.

In our yard: Honey Babe Miniature, Bonanza Miniature, Desert Gold, Santa Barbara

MINIATURE NECTARINE

Nectar Babe and Southern Belle Dwarf

Nectar Babe is a natural dwarf with full-size fruit. It pairs well with Pix Zee, and we carry the two grafted together on one tree. Southern Belle Dwarf is another compact choice for a sunny balcony.

In our yard: Nectar Babe Miniature, Southern Belle Dwarf, 2-in-1 Nectar Babe/Pix Zee, Panamint

LEMON & LIME

Meyer Lemon and Bearss Lime in Pots

Container citrus is the most useful tree a condo cook can own. Meyer lemon is sweeter and less acidic than store lemons. Bearss lime is nearly seedless. Kaffir lime gives fragrant leaves for Thai cooking.

In our yard: Meyer, Lisbon, Pink Lemonade, Bearss Lime, Kaffir Lime, Mexican Lime

KUMQUAT & CALAMONDIN

Nagami Kumquat and Calamondin

These two stay small and bear heavy loads of bite-size fruit. Nagami kumquat is eaten whole, peel and all. Calamondin makes a tart, bright juice. Both look tidy year-round in a glazed pot.

In our yard: Nagami Kumquat, Fukushu Kumquat, Calamondin

BLUEBERRY

Low-Chill Blueberries for Containers

Southern highbush blueberries do well in pots with acidic soil mix. Plant two varieties, such as Misty and Jewel, for better pollination and bigger crops. They give spring flowers, summer fruit and red fall color.

In our yard: O'Neal, Star, Jewel, Misty, Jubilee, Southmoon

BANANA

Dwarf Apple and Enano Gigante Bananas

A banana plant turns a small Westwood patio into a tropical retreat fast. Enano Gigante is a dwarf Cavendish type. Dwarf Apple bananas have a tangy, apple-like flavor. Give them wind shelter and steady water.

In our yard: Enano Gigante, Dwarf Apple, Ice Cream, Lady Finger, Raja Puri

SIZES & BUYING

Sizing a Tree for a Westwood Balcony or Courtyard

Small spaces need the right container size. These are the basics before you visit.

POT SIZES

Start Small or Go Big

A few varieties come in 5 gallon pots, which suit balconies with weight limits.

Most trees start at 15 gallon. Courtyards can take 24 inch boxes or larger.

CONTAINER LIFE

Pots Keep Trees Manageable

Container growing keeps a tree smaller for longer while it still fruits.

If you move apartments, your tree can move with you. Our growers explain how.

WHEN IT FRUITS

Fruit Sooner Than You Think

Many trees on our lot are already fruiting age.

Others usually start bearing two to three years after planting, once roots settle in.

PICKUP

Fits in a Car? We Will Load It

Small trees ride fine in an SUV with the seats folded down.

Our crew loads them for you. You handle tie-downs for the drive home.

OUR FRUIT TREES

Every Fruit Tree We Grow for Westwood Gardens

Westwood buyers often need trees that fit a patio as well as a yard.

We note compact picks below; every variety links to full sizes.

Tropical & Subtropical Fruit Trees

For Westwood patios, try dragon fruit and passion fruit on a trellis. Yards can handle avocado.

Classic & Stone Fruit Trees

Fig and loquat stay tidy in smaller Westside yards.

Citrus Trees

Kumquat and dwarf lemon are the top balcony picks near UCLA.

Berries & Vines

Blueberries grow well in pots with the right soil mix.

Flowering Trees

Plumeria in a big pot brings tropical color to a Wilshire condo.

Spices, Palms & More

Bay leaf grows happily in a container by the kitchen door.

GROWING GUIDE

Fruit Trees That Thrive in Westwood

Westwood sits close enough to the ocean for mild winters and cool mornings.

YARDS

Single-Family Homes

Mild coastal influence with very little frost.

Good picks: avocado, citrus, cherimoya, guava, loquat and fig.

PATIOS & BALCONIES

Condos Along Wilshire

Sun matters more than space. A large pot and six hours of sun go far.

Good picks: dwarf citrus, kumquat, fig, dragon fruit and passion fruit.

HILLSIDE LOTS

Holmby Hills & North Westwood

Better drainage and more sun, with cooler air in low spots.

Good picks: persimmon, pomegranate, macadamia, citrus and sapote.

WESTWOOD & UCLA AREA

Small-Space Fruit Trees Near UCLA and Westwood Village

Many homes around UCLA and Westwood Village have patios, not big lawns.

Our miniature peaches, Nectar Babe nectarines and potted Meyer lemons were made for that.

Near the Hammer Museum and the Wilshire corridor, high-rise balconies get strong sun.

Kumquats, calamondins and blueberries handle that exposure in containers.
