WHY IT’S WORTH THE DRIVE

Why Malibu Homeowners Make the Drive

A mature tree fills in a coastal garden years faster than a young one.

Our decades of experience help Malibu clients pick trees that handle wind and salt air.

40 YEARS

Mature Trees for Instant Impact

Our trees reach up to 40 years old. They add shade, privacy and fruit right away.

COAST-READY

Picks That Like the Ocean Air

We help you choose trees that tolerate wind, marine layer and sandy soil.

RARE

Tropical Varieties Few Nurseries Stock

Find cherimoya, sapote, lychee and passion fruit in sizes you won’t see locally.

FEATURED TREES

Fruit Trees That Stand Up to Malibu Wind and Salt Air

Malibu gardens deal with ocean wind, salty air and steep canyon soils.

These tough varieties from our yard handle coastal conditions better than most.

Availability changes often. Check our inventory or call 760-434-5085 before you make the drive.

FEIJOA

Pineapple Guava for Windy Bluffs

Pineapple guava is one of the toughest fruit plants for the coast. Its silvery leaves handle wind, and its edible flower petals taste like cotton candy. Plant a row as a living windbreak.

In our yard: Pineapple/Feijoa, Red Strawberry Guava, Yellow Strawberry Guava

FIG

Excel, Tena and Black Mission Figs

Figs root deep and tolerate poor, rocky canyon soil. Excel is a yellow fig with amber flesh. Tena is compact and very productive. Black Mission is the old California classic.

In our yard: Black Mission, Excel, Tena, Long Verde, Pasquale

POMEGRANATE

Wonderful and Loma Red Pomegranates

Pomegranates love sun and need little water once established. Wonderful is the standard deep-red variety. Field Sweet and White are milder and softer-seeded. Orange spring flowers add color to dry slopes.

In our yard: Wonderful, Loma Red, Field Sweet, Sweet, White

AVOCADO

Reed and Fuerte Avocados

Avocados do well in frost-free coastal canyons with good drainage. Reed fruits in summer with large, round fruit. Fuerte has thin green skin and creamy flesh. Choose a spot sheltered from the strongest onshore wind.

In our yard: Reed, Fuerte, Hass, Lamb Hass

LEMON

Lisbon and Pink Lemonade Lemons

Lisbon lemon is vigorous, thorny and heat tolerant, a good fit for canyon yards. Pink Lemonade has striped green fruit and pink flesh. It is new to our yard. Meyer lemon suits protected patios.

In our yard: Lisbon, Pink Lemonade, Meyer, Santa Teresa, Buddha Hand

PASSIONFRUIT

Fredericks Purple Passion Vine

Passionfruit vines cover a fence or pergola within a season or two. Fredericks is a purple type with tangy, fragrant pulp. It brings large, exotic flowers to an ocean-view deck.

In our yard: Fredericks Purple Passion

SIZES & BUYING

Getting Trees from Vista to Malibu

Malibu is a long haul from our yard. These tips make the trip worth it.

SIZE RANGE

Choose a Size for Your Slope

Smaller trees in 15 gallon pots establish quickly on steep ground.

For instant impact, we offer 25 to 65 gallon pots, box trees and 100 gallon specimens.

FRUITING AGE

Mature Trees Fruit Right Away

Plenty of our stock is already old enough to bear fruit.

Younger trees spend year one rooting in, then usually fruit by year two or three.

TRANSPORT

Protect Trees on PCH

We do not ship. We will load your truck or trailer at the nursery.

Cover leaves with a tarp so ocean wind on PCH does not shred them.

CALL AHEAD

Confirm Stock Before the Drive

Inventory changes weekly, and some citrus is in limited supply.

Call 760-434-5085 before you leave. Phone reservations require full payment.

OUR FRUIT TREES

Every Fruit Tree We Grow for Malibu Gardens

Malibu gardens do best with trees chosen for wind, salt and marine layer.

We list the toughest coastal picks first in each group.

Tropical & Subtropical Fruit Trees

Guava and avocado shrug off ocean breezes. Save mango and sapote for sheltered ridge gardens.

Classic & Stone Fruit Trees

Fig and loquat handle coastal conditions better than most stone fruit.

Citrus Trees

Lemons and limes stay productive near the beach with a little wind protection.

Berries & Vines

Blackberries and grapes do well in canyon gardens away from salt spray.

Flowering Trees

Bird of paradise handles coastal conditions well and blooms most of the year.

Spices, Palms & More

Palms add a classic coastal look and handle ocean wind.

GROWING GUIDE

Fruit Trees That Thrive in Malibu

Malibu mixes ocean bluffs, canyons and sunny ridges. Each area suits different trees.

BEACHFRONT & BLUFFS

Carbon Beach, Point Dume & Broad Beach

Cool, moist air with wind and salt spray.

Good picks: avocado, guava, citrus, fig and loquat.

CANYONS

Malibu Canyon, Latigo & Ramirez Canyon

Sheltered from wind, with cooler nights in low spots.

Good picks: persimmon, pomegranate, loquat, citrus and macadamia.

SUNNY RIDGES

Malibu Hills & Upper Slopes

More sun and heat, with fewer frosts.

Good picks: mango, cherimoya, sapote, avocado and dragon fruit.

MALIBU COASTLINE & CANYONS

Trees for Point Dume Bluffs and Malibu Canyon Slopes

Bluff-top yards near Point Dume and Zuma Beach face steady onshore wind.

Pineapple guava, pomegranate and Excel figs hold up well there.

Inland canyons off Malibu Canyon Road and Latigo stay warmer and calmer.

Those pockets suit Reed avocado, Lisbon lemon and passionfruit on a fence.
